The first practical step towards the construction of the Trans-continental railway is indicated by tho Federal Government calling tenders for a hundred and thirty-five thousand tons of steel rails. Mr O'Malley claims that it is the biggest railway job in the world. It will cover sixty-three thousand miles and will be carried out by day labour. Eighteen hundred men will be required. Asked what preference would be extended to English manufacturers, Mr O'Malley said outside Australia tenders had only been called in England. This should indicate the Government's intention.
