SETTLEMENT IN THE DISTRICT.

EASTERN LANDS TO BE OPENED

A work which will have a great | effect on the growth and prosperity of j Te Kuiti is at present being prosecuted on the large area of Grown land lying to the eastward of the railway between Te Kuiti and Poro-o-tarao. The area of land affected totals about thirty thousand acres, and a start has been made to lay off roads and survey it into suitable sections for settlement. The district is practically roadless except for the existence of a few old Maori tracks and it is estimated that the work will occupy at least two ye§j.rs. It is, of course, impossible to offer any definite opinion on the subject, but probably the road system of tna block referred to will eventually link up with the roads tapping tha southern portion of the Rangitoto settlement. The block to subdivided is in touch with the railway line between Puketutu and Mangapehi, and the furthest out sections will probably not be more than seven miles from the railway The bulk of the land is of fairly good quality, consisting of mixed bush and fern and fairly even in contour. A result that will probably be effected by the work in question will be the putting through of a good main rosd from Te Kuiti southwards, which will be of immense benefit to settlement right through to Ongarue. MrSkeet, the new Commissioner for Crown Lands for the Auckland district, has a thorough acquaintance with the King Country and his knowledge is evidently to "be turned to good account in opening ud the district for sett lenient. ___™
