THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

To the Editor.

Sir,—l think it is time somebody took up the matter of agitating for a universal half-holiday. Even in Te Kuiti we have the experience of one half the population getting Thursday half-holiday, while the other half have take Saturday simply because of a difference in occupation. It has always struck me as ridiculous that such an anomaly should exist in a progressive country such as New Zealand. It is bad enough in big towns, but in a place like Te Kuiti it borders on the ridiculous.. Shopkeepers will advance any number of reasons for the perpetuation of an old custoir, and will fail to see virtue in any reason advanced for an alteration. The time is certainly coming when the public at large will take a broader view of the matter and a change will come with a rush. In the interests of all workers it is surely an advantage that each should have equal opportunity for recreation. The idea that business would be dislocated or that the innovation wouln operate to the disadvantage of any section of the community seems very far fetched. I should like to see the matter referred to the public and the issue put clearly to them when I feel sure the Saturday half-hoilday would be acclaimed by an overwhelming majority. — am, etc., WORKER.
