CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC. The picnic promoted by the Church of England Sunday school was brought off on Monday last. The morning was beautifully fine and a large crowd of children and adults left Te Kuiti by train for Hangatiki, where in a paddock kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Board, the picnic was held. Upon arriving at the ground luncheon was provided, after which sports for both children and grown-ups were indulged in. The keenest competition was provided by the married ladies racein which Mrs Hambrook finished first with Mrs Hyde just inches be hind. The men's open race was won by Mr Heke, who also accounted for the race for the clergy. The long race for all under 18 was won by Miss Kathleen Hitchcock who put up a remarkable performance. Rain descended in the afternoon and the party took refuge in the goods shed, at Messrs Greon and Colebrook's, and in the school room, of which the key was kindly produced by Mr Scholes. Tea and games were indulged in until the train arrived at 7.30 p.m., a most enjoyable time being spent despite the weather.
