HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT

The High Commissioner, under date of January 27th, reports as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) : Mutton. The market is quiet. Trade in mutton is very disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand. Although a very limited supply, buyers are not inclined to make forward purchases of mutton at present prices, in anticipation of heavy arrivals. But holders are firm. North Island 4§d, Australian 3id ; River Plate 3Jd. Lamb.—There is a good demand for all lamb. River Plate lambs are of better quality than last year. New Zealand lamb (other than Canterbury) averages 3|d, Australian 4|d, River Plate 4£d. Beef.—The beef market is very firm, and is affected by a decrease in the arrivals. New Zealand stocks are almost exhausted. New Zealand hinds Aid, fores 4d. A small quantity on hand has sold at this price. Butter.—The market is quiet, but holders are firm, as a moderate supply is expected and increasing quantity is going to the Continent. The average price fjr the week for choicest New Zealand butter is 131s, Australian 120s, Agentine 128s, Danish 1355, Siberian 1295. Cheese.—The market is firmer, and there is more demand. The average price for the week for finest New Zealand cheese in white is 72s 6d, English cherldar 90s. . Hemp.—The market is a shade weaker Very heavy shipments are expected from Manila. The market is dependent on Manila report. New Zealand good fair grade, on the spot, nrtton, £2l 10s fair grade £2O 10s; fair current Manila £2l 6s, forward shipment New Zealand good fair £2l 15s fair £2O 15s; fair current Manila £23. The output from Manila for week is 3 1 .000 bales. Wool.—The market for merino is a shade weaker. . The cocksfoot seed market is nrm.
