OTOROHANGA.
Own Correspondent. A public meeting was held in Otorohanga on Wednesday last with the idea of resuscitating the old sports committee. Mr Jno. Orznsby was voted to the chair. Mr Rayner, who convened the meeting, said that remarkably good and successful athletic sports have been held in Otorohanga in the past, and he thought the time was ripe now that there were a number of fresh people in the district, to revive the sports committee that had been allowed to lapse. Mr Raynor stated that he had interviewed between 30 and 40 people, who were favourable to another sports meeting being held and who were prepared to go on the general committee. Mr G. Allwright suggested that instead of a sports committee a sports club, with a membership fee, should be formed, and after a bit of discussion it was decided to form a society tu be called "The Otorohanga Athletic Club" with a membership fee of 5s ner annum.
Mr H. Raynor was appointed secretary arid Mr Hawkins treasurer. The member of the district is to be asked to accept the position of patron, and Mr W. Vicary was appointed president. A number of gentlemen were appointed vice-presidents, but all I did not catch all the names, I have no doubt the gentlemen will receive notification of the honour conferred upon them.
After a large committee had been formed a working committee of fourteen members was formed to carry out the detail work. The first meeting of the working committee will be held on Saturday (to-night) at 8 o'clock.
Mr Garland, chairman of the Auckland Board of Education, and Mr Farrell, architect, visited Otorohanga on Tuesday, and paid a visit of inspection to the school and school residence. In the afternoon they conferred with the school committee and informed them that they considered the teacher's residence would not be worth altering, but thought it would be better to sell the present house, and build a more up-to-date residence on the qite proposed by the committee. Residents will learn wth regret that Mr Colhoun is to be transferred to Ngaruawahia immediately. Mr Hill, the new teacher appointed to here, is a teacher of 27 year's experience and good certificate, and has a family of nine. The board's architect states that the school is to be repainted immediately. The committee brought up the matter of building a new school near the Hauturu junction, and advised having it built before the roads became bad again. A meeting ' L is called for Monday night to arrange for the annual picnic for the school children of the district.
