SHOCK LIKE EARTHQUAKE. SCENE OF DESTRUCTION. \Jy Telegranh.—Press Association.—nopj-ris-n* London. Monday. A water tank in a gasometer at Ilkston burst and the gasometer collapsed, partially demolishing a row of cottages. A girl was drowned and others were injured. The gas ignited and a second gasometer also collapsed, causing great damage. Received January 9, 11.15 p.m. London, Yesterday. Hkstone was shaken like an earthquake, the gasometer being flung thirty yards. The flames soared hundreds of feet in the air. The occupants of the demolished cottages had miraculous ecsapes. Several buildings were burnt and the debris on the railway caused a suspension of traffic. It is believed the gasometer yielded to the pressure of water, causing the gas to escape and ignite. The explosion burst the water holder and a torrent flooded the houses and factories.
