MANURING MANGOLDS.
A crop of mangolds, 22 tons roots .and leaves, is said to extract from the soil 1381b of nitrogen, 531b of phosphoric acid and 3001b of potash, the dominant constituents being nitrogen and potash. It is a crop that requires to be supplied with liberal quantities of plant food. A dressing which can be recommended is 15 tons farmyard manure applied in autumn or winter, supplemented in the spring by a complete manure, containing from 4 to 5 per cent, of ammonia, 15 to 20 per cent, of phosphate of lime, with at least 12 per cent, soluble; 3 to 4 per cent, of potash. Drilled with seed, and 1 cwt. of nitrate of soda broadcasted when the plant comes up.
