THE WOOL MARKET.

JANUARY SALES. The second of the 1911-12 series of wool sales is to take place in nuck land on Wednesday next, and indications are generally in favour of a very successful fixture. At the opening sales in November there was a record attendance of buyers, the offerings were large, and the prices firm. A repetition of these conditions is promised.

So far as prospects for the clip are concerned, the season is still backward on account of the wet weather, and the quantity of wool to be offered is not likely to be as much as at the second sales of last reason. On the whole, the wool is well grown and sound, and generally it is in good condition. There is still room, however, for considerable improvement in regard to skirting. The November sales panned out better in Auckland than the opening sales down south. The Romney-Lin-coln cross continues to prevail in this province, and there is no doubt of it suitability for the climate and the nature of the country. The hardy frame of the Romney and the strong j wool of the Lincoln forms just the combination that is needed.

Apart from the keenness of the Americans this season, Bradford is buying well, while good support comes from the Continent, the Germans exhibiting special freedom. At the same time the political and labour outlook in England being somewhat disturbed, the market must remain in a speculative condition. Local merchants predict, however, tnat prices next week will be in keeping with the satisfactory opening rates of the first sale o! the season.
