TE KUITI DRAINAGE SCHEME.
ENGINEER'S TENDER ACCEPTED
At last night's meeting of Te Kuiti Borough Council the drainage scheme came up for discussion when the Works Committee recommended the acceptance of the lowest tender for the work, the tenderers having agreed to reduce the price of their tender by £SO in consideration of a portion of the work being left out. The Mayor said he had received an intimation from the engineer that he could get the work done at his (the en gineer's) estimate which was .£456 lower than the lowest tender for the work. As a matter of fact Mr Spencer had ottered to do the work himself at his own estimate. This was a matter which should be considered by the council as it meant a good deal to the ratepayers. Crs Julian and Forsyth said they disaproved of the principle of calling for tenders and subsequently arranging with another party at a lower figure. However a considerable amount was involved, and the matter should be discussed.
Mr Spencer, on being asked if he would put his tender in writing, said he would do so providing he knew what engineer would be obtained to supervise the work. On the motion of Cr Finlay, seconded by Cr Julian, it was decided to obtain the services of Mr H. H. Metcalf, of Auckland, as supervising engineer, providing Mr Spencer's tender was accepted.
Mr Spencer intimated his willingness to work under the supervision of Mr Metcalf and his tender was accepted, the usual deposit being lodged.
