KIO KIO.

FARMERS' UNION ENTERTAINMENT. Own Correspondent.

Favoured by fine weather the Kio Kio branch of the Farmers' Union held a highly successful enteitainment on the Bth inst., when about 100 people assembled in the Puketarata school. The object in view was to inaugurate a fund for the erection of a public hall in the district. tn common with many other country places Kio Kio is at a disadvantage in having no suitable building wherein functions can be held, and consequently social intercourse is much restricted. The pleasure and benefit to be derived from periodical gatherings are often too little realised, but it is hoped that at no very distant date the organisation in this district of concerts, dances, and the like will be a much easier matter than it is at present. Viewed financially the function was an entire success, though so far the exact figures are not available. The amount in hand, however, will be sufficiently large to encourage energetic action in the direction of further increasing the hall fund. The programme submitted was carried out without a hitch, and those present expressed their appreciation of the manner in which Miss Ross and her colleagues had prepared the various details. Visitors from surrounding districts ren r " '°d valuable assistance, and thf .cms were much enjoyed. At the conclusion of the concert refreshments were handed round and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by a short dance at which Mrs Gardiner very kindly filled the position of pianiste.
