DOMINION PROHIBITION.
VOTE NEARLY 120,000 SHORT. N.Z. ALLIANCE FIGURES. COME WITHIN SSOO VOTES. The latest returns in the national j prohibition issue make it clear that j the vote in favour of this.proposal being carried, though heavy beyond all j expectations, has failed to run the country "dry" by a total of nearly 2u",<Jou'votes. In the totals arrived at i'rum the Press Association figures received from the various electorates, the vote for prohibition was 55.7 per cent., a matter of 4.S per cent, short of the necessary three-fifths majority. According to returns received from the New Zealand Alliance headquar- ] ters at Wellington, however, the figures in favour of prohibition go much nearer to the 00 per cent, of the whole vote cast, the Alliance calculation bringing the percentage cast in favour of the proposal to ;'iS. with a deficiency of only SSOO votes of the number necessary to have secured a comp/ete prohibition victory. The following is the position as calculated by the Alliance:— For prohibition ... 202.;0" Against prohibition ... 180,070 Majority for prohibition ... 72,517 Three-fifths vote required ... 271,:>02 Votes required to carry p-ohibition ... S,SOO The following is a summary of the position arrived at by Press Association figures :-- For prohibition ... 251,1 S0 Against prohibition ... 100,070 Majority for prohibition ... 51,501 Three-fifths vote required ... 270,515
