WATER FOR DAIRY FACTORY.

APPLICATION TO COUNCIL. At the Borough Council meeting on Monday night a letter was read from the secretary of the Te Kuiti Pairy Factory, requesting permission to have the factory connected with the borough water supply. The Mayor, in explaining th>' position, said that the company had built the factory under the impression thai: a good water supply was avaliable. I had subsequently been discovered that the water was contaminated and the company had to face the position of acquiring a new spuply. The borough mains did not come within about Mi l chains of the facto.y but no doubt they would be extended as far as the school in the near future. It was suggested that an inch and a-haif pipe from the school to the factory would answer the purpose. The estimated cost of this was aboi:t £b'(). A similar case had occurred at Eltham where the borough had agreed to pay half the cost and the company had agreed to take a certain quantity of water at. a given price sufficient to protect, the council for the extra cost and return a small profit. If the council couicl see its way to do the same here it. would be a big help to an industry that was of the greatest importance to the whole district.

Cr Forsyth said the ratepayers hat! to he considered first, and the financial limitations controlled the case. They were faced with the fact that after present requirements were met there was not sufficient money left to build the dam. He realised the importance of the industry, but the present scheme had to be financed before they undertook any extSnsion.

Cr Finlay said he thought the matter should be referred to the Works Committee. The committee could confer with the Dairy Company and some proposition might be arrived at

Cr Tammadge seconded the motion, which was carried.
