Communication hag been received that a consignment of poles for our
local telephone line is expected to be landed on the next trip of the s.s. Pitoitoi, which is expected to put in its appearance over the heads any day now. News has also been received that the department are shipping a trial consignment of hollow steel telegraph poles from America. These are hollow and jointed like sections of water pipe and can easily be packed from place to place; they are fireproof and light, besides being less bulky cargo than wood. By the use of these the trouble which very often arises at present owing to the roughness and inaccessibility of some of the country through which telegraph lines tarverse, are quite overcome in this novel and simple manner. Now, a few pack loads of jointed steel pipes will silve this difficulty, and the long, long delay arising from the result of bad roads and the lack of transport, facilities will disappear into the limbo of things that were. So mote it be. Wooden poles will be used for the Moeatoa section of the line, the others arriving in time. Shearing is delayed owing to the wetness of the weather experienced of i late.
