Own Correspondent. The event of the week was a cricket social and dance, under the management of the Cricket Club officials and a ladies' committee consisting of Mesdatnes Wiley and Brett and Mis 3 Klein. Great credit is due to the promoters, especially the ladies mentioned for carrying out their duties so thoroughly and efficiently. The floor was pronounced to be in firstclass order and the merry-makers by keeping the ball rolling till long after dawn, endorsed Byron's wellknown lines "No sleep till morn, where youth and pleasure meet, to chase the glowing hours with flying feet. Mr E. C. Stanley, president of the club, presided. In a few wellchosen words, Mr J. Mathieson, captain, introduced their president. Mr Stanley, who has a wide knowledge of Englishmen and colonials, made some very interesting remarks about cricket. Wherever a few Britishers of the right stamp (men who are proud of the traditions of their countrymen), meet frequently cricket club 3 always result. Sport, and by sport he meant clean sport, was one of the factors maintaining our physical, mental and moral fitness as a nation. The function was arranged to do honour to the club's mo3t successful batsmen of last year. Mr Dines, now of Te Kuiti, had presented a bat to the club he. was once an official of. Cheers for Mr Frank Brett, the winner, for the ladies and for the president, ended a neat littlj ceremony, which will long be remembered.
As an evidence of theprogress of the district two butchery businesses are now in full swing. The billiard room has just been enlarged, a neat refreshmment booth having been completed by the proprietor. Ngakahii. Mr Rima Barlow is erect'ng a fiveroomed cottage on his land in the township here, It is whispered that wedding bells will be ringing shortly. On Wednesday, 20th December, the local schools are to have a combined picnic. A cricket match and dance is on the books for election day. Mr George Richards, vice-captain of the cricketers, has been appointed uoatmaster.
