CRICKET.
The local plajers are starting the season full of enthusiasm for the game and are making active preparations to get the wicket into good condition. It will be necessary to make a matting wicket for the season, and the outfield will be in rather a rough state, but with combined efforts on the part of player 3 the ground can be put irto sufficiently good order to play good cricket »<n. A considerable time will be required by most of the local players to get into form, and it is to be hoped members will be assiduous at practice as soon as the ground is fit for play. Present indications point to the conclusion that there will be no dearth of matches during the season, but owing to the fact that a good number of
games will have to be played away from home the selection committee will no doubt find their work of gettig teams together no sinecure.
It is expected that with a few days fine weather it will be possible to start play on Saturday next. The
necessary material in the shape of matting and other requisites has been ordered and should be to hand during the week.
Subscriptions are coming in well I and there is evidently going to be ample support accorded to the King of Games. Players in the Taumarunui district have always been keen on ths game and this season intend having a try to secure the Hawke Shield. It will be remembered that the Shield was presented by Lord Hawke for competition among the country associations, and is at present held by Southland. The chances of the King Country making a bold bid for the trophy are second to
none. An eleven could probably be chosen from Taumarunui and Te Kuiti that would take a power of beating from any of the second-class associations. It is something worth practising for. Let us make the effort.
