CRICKET.
The English team of cricketers at present engaged in the arduous chase for "the ashes" in Australia is evidently a good one. A first innings on Australian soil resulted in 563 runs being notched, three centuries being included in the total. Unfortunately the South Australian bowling is not conspicuous this season for its strength and variety. The brunt of the attack fell upon Whitty and Crawford, and capable as these two trundlcrs are. the lack of variety must have been severely felt. It is freely stated, moreover, that Whitty is not the bowler he was of old. A seriuU3 operation a few months ago is said to have left its mark upon the South Austalian, and it will probably be a considerable time before he recovers his best form. It was intended to have played a match at Te Kuiti between Mangapehi and Fio Piu last Sat., but owing to the time allowed for making the necessary arangements being rather short, it was deemed advisable to postpone the game. It is to be hoped a series of matches between the various districts will be arranged for the season, as there is much promising material available.
