NEW REGULATIONS

LIBERAL EXTENSIONS. New regulations extending the scope of the Postal Departent in the matter of telephone communication are just gazetted and come into force on January Ist next; In view of the enormous benefits which the telephone service confers upon any rural district the new regulations will be widely be welcomed and nowhere with greater satisfaction than in Taumarunui elcetorate. The following synopsis will be read with interest: — "Party lines may be joined to telephone exchanges, and will be . constructed by the department. For two subscribers up to one mile at the rate of £3 10s per annum. .Beyond that distance, up to three miles, for three, four, five or six subscribers, £3 per annum. Beyond three miles, on any existing line fifteen shillings per annum extra for each quarter mile. For a special line of poles, £1 per annum extra for each quarter mile. Beyond four miles the department will extend the line a further distance of one mile the subscriber to pay half cost. . For any further extension subcribers must pay the whole cost of construction. One entrance fee for each circuit only. Private owners may construct their own ilnes to meet, departmental line. Regulations come into force on January Ist. Public telephone offices suffer no alteration from present regulations. Offices will be establishedvvhere circumstances warant on the residents or county council guaranteeing half the estimated loss on interest on the cost of construction at 3h per cent, and working expenses.
