ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
SITTING OF COMMISSION
The commission, consisting of Mr L. G. Reed, S.M. (of Wairarapa), Mr Frank Dyer (Wellington), and Mr W. Stewart (Kawakawa), appointed by the Government to inquire into and report upon the petition lodged by ths Waikato Acclimatisation Society, to be created a separate district and allotted a portion of the territory at present under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, held its opening sitting on Monday. Mr Reed, who was appointed chairman, intimated that the proceedings, which were in the nature of a departmenal inquiry, similar to a boundaries' commisison, would not be open to the press.
Mr Wyman, honorary solicitor to the Waikato Society, appeared for the petitioners, and Mr F. Earl, vice-president, for the Auckland Society, who are opposing the claim of the Waikato Society for a valuable slice of the local society's district.
Monday morning was occupied in arranging preliminaries and in hearing a statement of the case for the petitioners submitted by Mr Wyman. Evidence will be taken at Auckland, Hamilton, and Thames, and if necessary at Te Aroha.
