CAPTAIN IiKRUV'S PKHSKNTATION.
On Thursday night at, Pirongia a social was hcki in the Town Hall by tilt' members of the No. 2 Waikalo Mounted Pities, presided over by Lieut. l-'iiT, for the purpose of flaying farewell to Captain C. Berry, who in i.tirmi: iroin active command of the corps. Captain Berry had been a;■:■ (o• i; 111 il with the corps sinco it;i formation in 1S!)K, when he waa appointed the liratSprgt.-Ma.ior. to he followed hy being elected as Lieutenant 'Two years later he took command, and which position ho has continued in up to the preaent, with the exception of in l'.MUi when he had to resign through illness.
The presentation, which took fh* form of an "Old Arm Chair," wan made hy Colonel Bell, who highly eulogised Oaplain Berry. Colonel Bell strongly advocated the compulsory military trailing syi - tern. lie felt sure that if over if was necessary to p/o on active norvice that Captain Berry would he one of the first to join them.
Captain Berry, who was enthusiastically applauded, in reply thanked the corps for their very nice «ift. He would be one of the lirsl to go on service if called on, providing ho could get, out of the "Old Arm Chair." With regard to the adoption of compulsory military training Inthought that, had it stopped with the senior cadets at the ago of IS, it. would have been sufficient, as tho lessons inculcated from school to that age would be retained all through lifn. He also thought that certain officers owing to length of service and qualifications, were entitled to promotion, his old friend, Sergt.-Major Coleman being one of them.
