PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
OPENING CELEBRATIONS
DR JAMES GIBBS' VISIT
Sunday, October Ist, 1911. will remain as a redleUer day in tlie history of Te Kuiti. For all time it will stand memorable as the first day of the opening celebrations of the Presbyterian Church and thevi-'it of the Rev. James Gibb, D.D., of Wellington, who officiated so ably and acceptably for the occasion. Thy weather being ideal, permitted of success which might have been marred ha'd rain fallen. As it was the bright sunshine and good roa 's added their tonic to the spirit and allowed the people of adjacent; districts to attend and enjov the celebrations. Many folk who had heard of the special preacher, either preaonaily or by repute gathered to make the mo3t of the visit of so great a man. Dr Gibb proved an ideal minister, his fine presence, his fervent eloquence, his scholarly and dignified personality and resonant voice, combined to charm the congregation and produce most edifying services. The celebrations commenced with a large service in the morning in the Town Hail, at which Dr Gibb preached an able sermon to the stirring of all present, from the words of Paul to the Thessalonians, "Quench not the Spirit." The evening service in the same building was undoubtedly the largest religious gathering ever held in Te Kuiti, some four hundred people being present from far and near. Dr Gibb again reached and received rapt attention, as he eloquently discoursed from the "Parable of the Talents," his text being, "To him that hath shall be given, from him that hath not shall be taken, etc." A solo was beautifully sung by Miss James, and a large and well trained choir under the baton of Mr A. Pattison gave a splendid rendering of the anthem, "King of Kings," Mrs Darbyshire taking the solo vary effectively.
During the services Dr Gibb congratulated the people upon the progress made and upon the way they were pulling together with their minister for the advance of Christ's kingdom through the Presbyterian Church. He urged them to go on and make the promising future splendid with accomplished good. On Monday the Dr. took the opportunity of visiting the Waitomo Caves and was very deeply impressed by their lovely grandeur and the unique splendour of the "Glow Worm Scene." In the evening an evangelistic service was held in the Congregational Church, when the Dr. gave an eloquent and most impressive address from the words," One thing thou lackest,'' ta a good congregation. Dr Gibb was very favourably impressed with the improved tone of life prevailing, in Te Kuiti, on the whole and spoke of-the apparent law abiding and Sabbath reverencing spirit that was evident.- In all probability he will return again to Te Kuiti in a few months for h longer stay in the interests of Christian work in our midst. Dr Gibb can, be assured of a large and responsive . welcome,, whenever that may be.
The second Sunday of the celebrations wiil frw held on October 15th when the 'church will be opened. Specially helpful and enjoyable music will be rendered by the large choir and soloists and a special preacher officiate. The choir will practise each Friday night in the church for the opening, while the ladies are assidu.ously working for a very successful tea and concert on Tuesday, 17th October. Full advertisements of thesa events will appear later.
