ALLEGED THEFT.
A young man, a half-caste, named Lovett, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon by Constable Matbew, on a charge of theft. The accused was charged at the Police Court on Thursday morning before Mr J. Tamrnadge, J.P., and was remanded for a week. It is alleged that MrT. Wells, butcher, took his watch and chain with a pendant attached, to Mr R. Fenton's, jeweller, for repairs and evidently when Mr Fenton, unthinkingly, was examining the watch he had left the pendant and chain on the counter, to come back and find it missing. All this was in the course of a few minutes. All endeavours to trace the missing articles by Mr Fenton were in vain. However, it is a long lane that has no turning, and Mr Wells, on Tuesday afternoon, when chatting with a friend of his, noticed the pendant and asked where he got it, and the reply was that he had purchased it for half-a-crown. Further enquiries by communication with the police, elicited the fact that the young man was arrested and the chain recovered.
