GENERAL ELECTION.
THE TAUMARUNUI SEAT
Mr W. Forbes, an Opposition candidate for Taumarunui, delivered his opening address at Waitara on Friday evening. He practically adopted the Opposition platform, and stated that he was in favour of straightening up finance, freehold land tenure, and Civil Service reform. On the liquor question he favoured a Dominion poll rather than local option, and a bare majoritv vote. Fie is against the Defence Act as it stands, contending that there should be a conscience clause. Mr N. Winter, Taumarunui, has written the Boundaries Commissioners requesting that the head polling place should be at Taumarunui, instead of at Waitara. The matter has been referred to the chief electoral officer. Mr Frank Lawry, M.P., has decided to retire from the Parnell seat, and Sir J. G. Findlay has consented to stand a3 the Liberal candidate at the general election.
