COUNTRY NEWS.

(Own Correspondents). Te Mapara. Saturday last wag a great day in Te Mapara, there being a large gathering at Mr McLean's house, in honour of his birthday. A large number of settlers and their friends assembled and a very pleasant time was spent in singing and dancing. Mr McLean and Mr W. Hallrnond opened the proceedings with a violin and accordeon duet and Mr Hallrnond senr. and Mr S. Garmenson acted a M.G.'s to the satisfaction of everyone. Songs were given by Mesdames Chartis, Dernpsay and King, Mr McLean sang his oid favourite " 'Am fo' th' Noo," in comic style, and MrDempey and Mr S. Garmenon also sang. Mrs McLean made a most efficient hostess and looked charming in a cream blouse and green skirt. Amongst other dresses worn by the ladies 1 noticed: Mrs Dempsey, silk blouse and black lustre skirt; Mrs Garmenson, rich blacklustre silk and blouse trimmed with [ satin; Miss Hallrnond, pink silk princess robe; Mrs King, a tweed costume; Mrs Chartis, shot silk blouse and grey costume skirt. This was the first party ever given in the Mapara settlement, and it i 3 to be hoped that others will follow, carried out in the same efficient manner. Everybody enjoyed themselves and went home happy in the small hours. The milking season will soon be starting here, and some of the set tlers are getting ready. The grass is coming on, and feed will soon be plentiful after the recent rains, though owing to the high prices ruling for dairy cows there won't be so many milked as there would have been otherwise. The worst trouble now will be to get the cream to the Pio Pio factory, as the bridge at the south end of the settlement is not built yet.
