ODDFELLOWS' BALL.

FOURTH ANNUAL BALL. Year in, year out, members of Friendly Societiess labour in the humanitarian cause of "helping others to help themselves," the return for such being nil. and it wa3 indeed very disappointing to members of the local Oddfellows' Order to see ths poor response at their fourth annual ball on Thursday evening, in the Town Hall. The members had gone to great trouble to see that nothing would be lacking to make the annual fixture a success. The hall had been very tastefully decorated with a great profusion of flags of all nations, appropriately .suspended from the ceiling, and beautiful tree ferns were arranged at suitable places, lending a very fresh appearance to the hall. The floor had also undergone a thorough preparation and was in almost perfect order for dancing. Trie Messis J. Hetet (piano) and D. Hetet (violin) supplied the music in their well-known pleasing manner, and received many congratulations for their efforts. The catering was in the hands of Mr J. 1. Thomson, which is a sufficient guarantee that only the best was supplied, most tastefully laid out in a large marquee alongside the hall. "With a perfect night for danc;ng clear and crips air—what more could be desired? But for some reason or other the attendance was anything but satisfactory, and compels one to wonder •what kind of amusement does the public want. In the line of dancing certainly better inducement could not have been offered for the modest price of admission, to say nothing for the cause for which the ball was held. However, those who did attend had the satisfaction of enjoying themselves to the full. Bros. J. Rutherford and Price carried out the onerous duties of M.C's. in a very attentive manner, and saw that nobody lacked partners. Extras were played by Messrs Gill and D. Hetet. It is to-be hoped that the public will roll up in greater numbers in the future otherwise the favourite winter pastime will have very few promoters in the future, for, indeed, Thursday night's response was very discouraging.
