A movement is on foot in Te Awamutu to form a league for carrying rating on the unimproved valuee in that town.
At a meeting of the executive committee of the A. and P. Association, held yesterday, it was resolved to accept the oiier made by the Racing Club subject to the drawing up of the necessary legal documents. Members of Te Kuiti Racing Club are reminded that the annual general meeting will be held in the Waitomo Countv Office on Tuesday, September 19th, "at 7.30 p.m. The report and balance-sheet will be presented, and other important business discussed.
Miss Handyside wishes to commence her painting class at 9.30 on Tuesday morning 3 for the convenience of some pupils. Pupils for voice production and culture desired. —Advt.

A meeting of the Borough Lighting Committee was held last night and Messrs J. J. JNiven and Co., the wellknown firm of engineers of Napier and Wellington, were appointed to act as experts to report fully as to the cost of installation, etc., for electricity, coal gas, and petrol gases. A poll was taken on Wednesday of the ratepayers of Johnsonville on two loan proposals —one for the installation of petrol gas lighting system, £3500, and the other for the erection of municipal offices, £BOO. _ Both proposals were carried, the voting being as follows: —Petrol gas lighting system —98 for 21 against; Municipal offices —86 —40.
"They have taken practically everything off the farm except the mortgage" said a southern farmer speaking of the recent ravages of the grass grub.
Green peas have made their appearance in the Wellington market the offering coming to hand from Nelson. Choice samples brought the attractive price of 4s per peck. Frencn beans realised Is 9d per lb. and new potatoes ranged from 4d to 4Jd peb lb.
It is understood that arrangements for an accelerated passenger and mail service between Wellington and Sydney are now being discussed by the Government and Union Steamship Company. It is proposed_ that the Union Company should build a new and up-to-date steamer of 10,000 tons, capable of making the voyage between Wellington and Sydney in two and a-half days.
A lady walked into a Masterton tradesman's shop the other day, and asked for a dozen black hens' eggs. ''What is the dilTerence between the eggs of the black and white bens?" asked the astonished assistant. "If you bring me the box," said the lady, "1 will show you." The vessel containing the egg 3 was placed upon the counter, and the customer selected a dozen ot the very largest eggs she could put her hands on to. "There," she said, "those are black hens' eggs, and I will take them!" The assistant has no further black hens' eggs in stock.
The Governor has taken Mr A. E. Rhodes' house in Christchurch, and will go into residence there in the fret week in November. He will stay in Christchurch for at least two months. He is relinquishing his Peatherston house at the end of October, as this property is about to be sold. It is possiDle tnat later on, he may take a house in Palmerston North.
