BUSHMAN KILLED.
SAD FATALITY AT OTORO HANG A.
From Our Own Correspondents
A sad bush fatality occurred on Saturday on Mr Vickerman's property, Mahoe road, near Otoroanga, by which a bushman named Albert Fenton, 22 years of age, was killed. His mate and he were clearing up a corner, and they were working about five chains apart. Hearing no noise his mate went over and found Fen ton dead ami an uprooted tree beside him (hat had evidently been started by the concussion of the. tree Fenton had felled. FURTHER DETAILS. It appears that three young fellows, Albert Fenton, A. Dew and Bagnall, had a contract for felling 200 acres of bush for Mr Viekerman. Shortly before two o'clock, Mr Dew, who was working nearest the unfortunate- man, could not hear the rinir of Fenton's axe, and, after listening a while, called out. As there was no anwser to his call Dew made his way over the logs to find out what was the matter. He found Fenton's body lying flat, cn the ground and lifeless. Dew and Bagnall carried the body for a number of miles till they came to Mr Johnson's place, where a buggy was obtained and used for the remainder of the journey to Otorohanga, where they arrived on Sunday evening. Mr Teasdale. Coroner, at Te Awamutu, was informed, and he brought Dr Reekie with him. At the inquest Dr Reekie said that the deceased's skull was fractured and his neck broken. The Coroner's verdict was "accidental death." It is surmised that a branch of a tree when falling struck the deceased and knocked him off a log. Fenton wa,s very well known and greatly respected in Otorohanga. His parents had only recently left the district, for Whangarei. Deceased was a hardworking and indu-urious young man. and a smart cricketer. It is pleasing to note that the members of the cricket team contributed for a suitable wreath and offered to act as pall bearers as a mark of the esteem in which they held their late comrade.
