LICENSES FOR LAND AGENTS.
A meeting of local land-agsnts was called for Monday night to discuss the Land Agents Bill now being introduced in the House of Representatives by Mr Witty. The principal clauses call for registration with the local authority, an annual fee of two pounds and a fidelity insurance bond of £SOO. Punishment for improper use of clients' funds involves a liability to two years' imprisonment and for failing to pay trust funds to a separate account or carrying on business when not registered to a fine of £SO.
The feeling of the gathering was against any fidelity guarantee bond being required and it was suggested that the annual license fee be at least £25, it being felt that while a fidelity bond could be obtained by anyone for a nominal premium, a substatial annual payment for a license would raise the status of the profession and deter casual individuals from attempting to do business. The fine of £SO for carrying on business unregistered is regarded as utterly inadequate, and unlikely to deter unscrupulous persons from doing business.
