OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL
A special meeting of the Ohura County Council was held on Tuesday, at which the County By-laws wen: reconstructed find brought: up to date. At the subsequent ordinary meetingthere were present: Crs Stevenson .(Chairman), S-iiuiison, Williams, . Stuart, Risk. Correspondence was received from: Mr Moir, Secretary to the Ongarue Vigilant Committee, in forming the : Council of their proposed celebration : of turning the first sod of the Strat- : lord-Ongame railway at Ongarue. i offering to assist the County Council in any action (lie Council may take in j the matter. Resolved, that; the Vigi- | hint Committee be advised that they j will be informed of the action of the ; Council which will be pleased to have i their assistance.
C. J. McKenzie, Resident Engineer, wrote that no ob jection would be I,alien to Council providing the timber required for the work', provided that an additional cost is thereby incurred. The Hon. Minister tor L'ublic Works wrote that he ivould be pleased to
meet a deputation any day : re."thirds," he is making inquiries into the question of transfer to Public Works.
From Mr Jennings, 11.1'., by telegram, that it is not proposed to take any action to transfer "thirds" but, proposals should be submitted to the Com missioner.
S. Samuels wrote on behalf of settlers on Ryan road asking the available "thirds" be expended. To he informed that all "thirds" have been scheduled for expenditure on this road, and the Council has to await the approval of the Land Board. Application for payment was made by Ryan and Co. in connection with the Turoto road contract. —Ifngineer to be instructed to make application for amount due.
John MeCormick Reane forwarded telegrams from the Minister for Public Works authorising him to continue work on roads. Notice was received from the Crown Lands Co.i'misisoner that £l'.)S 14s 9d of "thirds" was availab'C from sections 1, Block XIII, and section 2, Block IX, Aria S.D,, for expenditure between Mr Barnetts house and the Waitewhena bridge. Application was receive d from J. Kelly to have available "thirds'" in the Tongaporuru district expended on widening.- Scheduled for that pur pose.
Alteration of Rid ins. A special order altering the ridings was published in the "New Zealand Gazette" of 20th ult.
Contracts passed for approval Waitewhena, widening; Waiora,
chains widening; Mangakakikvtea widening, two contracts. The Valuation Department forwarded the subsidy of .£405 10d being 10s in the £ on £990 17s sd rates collected. Road Contracts. —Resolved, that all tenders in the Otangiwai riding he advertised for ten clear days. On the motion of Crs Stuari and Sandison the standard rate of pay for work on the roads within the County be 9s per day. Resolved that the new by-laws come into force eight weeks from date, and that all workmen's time on the roads must be filed in the oflice two cleardays before the monthly meeting. Pubilc Pound. Resolved, that the Commissioner of Crown Lands be requested te set aside a section in Mnngaroa as a site for a Public Pound. The Engineer reported that the cross section of Waikaka road had been taken, and that plans would he submitted to the District Engineer for approval as soon as possible. Tenders are to be called for burning 2500 yards of papa for a section of the road. It was advisable that all wiliows he cut down and removed from streams in the County.
