THE MAIROA LOAN.

At the meeting of the Waitomo ; County Council on Monday night, ! Major Lusk waited on the Council and ! wanted to know the exact position as \ regards the delay in connection with ! the Mairoa loan. There was a certain j amount of uneasiness, and in order to allay it he was deputed to find out the exact position, The Chairman said that as far as the Council was concerned the Council had finished with the matter. It was in the hands of the Treasurer's solicitor to see that everything was in order. The fact of ratepayers having objected to the original issue upset ail the plans. He was going to Wellington next week, and wou'd see what had been done in the matter. Cr Boddie recognised that the settlers had provided for the full money in their loan, and he thought if representations were made to the Treasury that a subsidy could be obtained. Cr Johnston represented a part of the County affected in which a great part was native land, and he thought if that Councillor accompanied the Chairman to Wellington it would strengthen his hand. One of the great disabilities had to be faced in the matter was that the road ran through seven miles of native lands which paid no rates. Cr Were: Are you not wrong, Cr Boddie about the road running through seven miles of native lands? Cr Boddie said he was not, to which Cr Were replied that he thought it was in the hands of white men and thev should pay rates. Cr Johnston said he would not mind going to Wellington if he thought he would be of any assistance in the matter.

Cr Boddie said that a petition was being largely signed by settlers asking for a subsidy. He would give it to the Chairman before going to Wellington. He proposed that Cr Johnston accompany the Chairman to Wellington.—Seconded by Cr O'Dwy-.-er, and carried.
