' The return match between Goldfields and Maniapoto was played in the Waihi Recreation Reserve on Saturday afternoon last in ideal football weather. Three minutes after the kick-off Black picked up fro::: the loose and passed to Thomas, to McClymont, to Maddison, who made good run and transferred to McCallum, the latter scoring a pretty try near the corner. Hyde made a brilliant kick, but it proved a "poster." From the drop out reds again attacked, when Potier, the visiting skipper, had his leg injured and was forced to retire. Thomas secured from a scrum and passed to Black, to McClymont, and Maddison, who made a telling run, and passed to McCallom, whose scored another brilliant try near the corner. Hyde failed. Shortly after the second quarter opened, the visiting full waited for the ball to bounce, and Hyde, takingadvantage of the opportunity, picked up and made a good run, passing to Black, to Maddison, who was grassed on the visitors' line. Hyde essayed goal from a penalty, but failed. The visitors rallied, and secured a free kick, from which W. Clark landed "fine goal. Goldfields had all the best of the game till the finish of the spell. The third quarter was opened by an attack by reds. Thomas picked up and scored a good try. Maddison failed. From a loose rush McClymont picked up, beat the visiting backs, and coming to the full he kicked over the latter's head and scored a pretty tryin a good position. Maddison converted. Greens' full mulled a high kick by Hyde, and the opposing forwards following up fast, Lennard scored. Black converted. Soon after the final spell opened, Thomas picked up from the loose and , passed to Black, who beat the visiting backs badly and passed back to j Thomas, who scored a very pretty . try. Thomas converted. Thomas : secured from a scrum and passed to . Black, to McClymont, to Maddison, j who beat the backs nicely, and, run- j ning to the full, passed to McCollum, j who scored another line try. Hyde failed. Nothing of any note followed , until B. Clark kicked a fine goal ; from a mark from nearly half-way. j Play was of an even nature till the j spell ended. Mr E. Johnson refereed. j NOTES. j The Maniaputo team showed dig- i tinct signs of staleness and did not display "anything like the dash and combination that had featured their I previous matches. The absence of Rotherv and the accident to Potier undoubtedly weakened the Maniapoto team. The combination of the Goldfields' backs was good, and proved too much for the visitors. \ On Wednesday evening last, follow- [ ing the Rotorua match, at the invita- ; tion of the people of Whakarewarewa, ; the Maniapoto team and officials were entertained at the Maori meeting ; house. A most interesting and enter- ■■ taining'evening was spent, which was j thoroughly enjoyed by all. Pci dances, i hakas and songs were given for the j entertainment of the visitors. The i singing of the native children was i wonderfully good, and they showed 1 Signs of having been carefully trained; j their voices blended beautifully, one chi d singing alto being particularly noticeable. After the entertainment dancing was indulged in. A dainty supper was supplied and much appreciated by the visitors. Guides Mrs Frost, Pipi and others did their utmost to make the evening an enjoyable one for all, and they may rest assued that the visitors appreciated very keenly the hospitality extended.
