SUPPLYING A NATIVE.
AN AIDER AND ABBETTOR
Peter McDonagh (Mr Eroadfoot) was charged with supplying a Maori with liquor in Te Kuiti_ on July loth. Accused pleaded not guilty. Informant, a Maori named Hunter, in giving evidence said that McDonagh gave him a drink ot whisky. On the night in question, there was a row in the street, and witness pointed out McDonaeh to the police as the man who had~suppliedhi.n with the whisky. By the Bench: Witness did not ask for a drink. Mr Eroadfoot: Did you not have several whiskies before you got on the train for Te Kuiti. •Witness: Excuse me your Worship, Ido not understand English. I would like an interpreter. For a faw minutes the solmemty of the Court was broken and bench, bar and public indulged in a hearty laugh. Mr Eroadfoot explained that the native in question was "hanging on" to McDonagh for a drink which he did not get. McDonagh, in giving evidence, said that the native sat b:side him in the train and wanted him to give him a drink. On arrival in Te Kuiti Hunter followed him about, and also into a dining room, where he went to have some tea. Hunter again asked him for a drink, and because he did riot give it to him he called witness filthy names. . . In reply to the Bench, witness said he had only one bottle of whisky with him, which if he wanted to give away there were plenty of white men to give it to. . His Wurship, in giving judgment, said that he would dismiss the case. Hunter he was satisfied was an accomplice, and a drunken one at that. He was an aider and abbettcr, and he could not have his uncorroborated evidence accepted.
