TERRITORIAL RECRUITS.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Up to the present, 261 young men and boys have been examined for militaary training by Lieutenant-Colonel Carolan. There are about 30 more to be examined in No. 16 area, and they have to come from outlying districts. To-day a couple of young men came over forty miles to be examined, and although quite in sympathy with the idea of military training, they complained that no arrangements for medical examinaton had been made in their district. They considered that it was unfair that only those who were within reasonable distance from the Main Trunk line had the privilege of being attended to on the spot. The weather was fine, and tney did not care to have to leave their sections, which they were improving. Lieut.Col. Carolan, when seen on the matter, said that there were only a small number of men in each of these districts, and that it was too far to go to them. He cited the fact that Awakin" and Mokau, which were sixty miles away, had also only a few men, and according to instructions those men would have to come to Te Kuiti, for examination. Col. Carolan said that the general physique of the men was good, especially settlers' sons, who were very well, developed and proportionate in height, weight and chest measurement. Boys examined were promising. As regards the teeth of both men and boys, the Colonel said that they were not good, but still they were very fair. Of the total number of those examined, a large proportion have been natives and half-castes, and the Colonel describes their teeth as excellent, in fact there were only two or three who had bad teeth. So far Pio Pio, Paemako, Wairriiha, Tangitu, Mangapeehi and Oterohanga have been visited.
