THE LIGHTING QUESTION.

To The Editor

Sir, —With respect to th? controversy concerning l electricity, coal and petrol gas, permit me to make a few statements re Eketahuna, which is held up as a brilliant example to Te Kuiti. If the delegates' figures are correct, Eketahuna has a 35 kilowatt installation. A dynamo of this

capacity, leaving out tha duplication which h advisable, will effectively light 720 1G candle power 50 watt 110 volt lamps. For shop lighting in this town are to be seen several 1000 candle power '"Lux" lights. The above dynamo would generate an equivaientof 12 "Lux" lightsof similar intensity. What would then be available for shop interiors, streets, dwellings and power? Nothing. Again as regards power: most of the 46 brakp horse power developed would be absorbed in transmission and friction, whilst the application of the balance to a circular, milling machine or other contrivance would cause the hair of the users of light to stand on end. Eketahuna has reached the end of its tether as far as light or power is concerned. -Future developments may be watched with interest. Electricity demands cheap generative power in overwhelming abundance —whicn Te Kuiti lack' 3 until the Mokau river is tapped.—l am, etc.,
