Ehrman, who was arrested at Wellington in connection with charges of cargo stealing at Auckland, escaped from custody at Te Kuiti while being brought to Auckland by the Main Trunk express at 2 a.m. this morning. On arrival of the express at Te Kuiti, the detective in charge of the prisoner asked him if he would have a cup of tea. Prisoner declined, f.wl. said he would smoke. After prisoner's smoke, the detective went, to the rear of the carriage and on returning in a brief time found primmer had escaped. Prisoner was fully dressed. The police are actively searching for him, and an arrest may be expected at any moment.
