LOST CATTLE.

At Monday's meeting of the Waitomo County Council, Cr Were raised a discussion on lost cattle advertised and Hold, if not claimed, saying he though one of such was his. AnyJ way the whole of the ear marks and brands were not given in the advertisement, and as far aa his information went it was (or these animals to go through the Public Pound. According to his reading of the Impounding Act, the finders could only retain the bullocks for 4S hours. Settlers in bis district were up in arms, and he would like the matter to be looked into. The Chairman said if a copy of the advertisement was given him, he would get an opinion from the County Solicitor. Cr Boddie said where cattle were sold by finders, the amount was due to the County. It should be made absolutely clear that no cattle could be kept beyond 48 hours, and the only person to keep cattle was the poundkeeper. Cr Were said the Council repre sented the ratepayers. The Impounding Act was under the control of the Council, and not the individual. If the Act was properly carried out it would hurt no one. Cr Johnstone said Messrs Lee Bros, had acted quite innocently and had left the money with the auctioneers. |
