LECTURE IN AUCKLAND. A TOWN PLANNING BILL. [iit ticli:<;rai"ii.—riu:ss association.] Auckland, Thiß Day. The interest taken in the agilatkn for the abolition of fllum areas wbb manifested by an overflow audienco nt the Choral Hall last nipht, whin many hundreds were unable to obtain admission*to hear a lecture by Mr C. C. Reade, editor of the 'Graphic," en "Slum Areas in Wellington and Auckland." The Hon. Geo. Fowlds resided. Mr Reade quoted many instances of overcrowding of families in dilapidated and insanitary houses, with inadequate yard spaces, and suggested either the purchase by the city of congested areas, and rebuilding, or to throw the onus of keeping the properties in good order on the owners, by strict an J explicit law. The Hon G.eo. Fowlds said that legislation was not nil that was required to set right the conditions that hid arisen, which should never ka\e arisen, even with the legislation now in force. What was essential was a healthy, cultivated, and instructed public opinion, that would not tolera'e such a state of affairs Having heard the lecture, and seen plainly the conditions existing, he asked: Was it not time something could be done? Fe added that next session he intended placing before Parliament a Town Planning Bill of a comprehensive nature A resolution was passed welcoming legislation conferring wide powers upon health officers and local bodies sufficient to enable them to compel owners and tenants to keep their premises clean and in habitable state of repair, and in every respect ennblo the health authorities and local bodies to wipe out the menace of bad and insanitary conditions.
