AMUSEMENTS.
EMPIRE PICTURES. The entertainment given for the benefit of Te Kuiti Boy Scout drew a good audience on Monday night at the Town Hall, despite the strong counter attractions elsewhere, and the funds of the scouts benefit very considerably as a result,\ for which the committee heartily thanks the manage ment. Opening with the Ohani trio, three wonderful acrobats, who performed remarkable feats, there followed "Lieut. Rose and the Chinese pirates," a dramatic rescue of the hero and heroine and an equally dramatic destruction of the pirates' lair. "The Queen of the Nihilists," was another dramatic subject full of thrills of excitement. There were numerous comic films—notably "Wooing a Widow," in which Mr George Grossmith, junior, takes the part of the somewhat verdant Mr Green, and "I've lost a penny"—a comicai search for that small coin on the part of a welldressed group. "The Valley of Aosta" was a fine scenic subject, and generally, the pictures proved popular and entertaining. On Monday next another fina programme is promised, including "The champion swordsman of the British Army," "The Island of Capri," "Drontheim" —two beautiful scenics, "For the Sunday edition," "Tommy gets a trumpet," "Tweedledum as policeman," and the ever popular "Pathe Gazette." On Wednesday, July 12th, the company show at Otorohanga. j
ALEXANDRA RINK. The first night of the skating Carnival at the Alexandra Rink drew large numbers of spectators. Some really delightful lancy dress coßtumes were worn by the rinkers, and to see them gracefully circling in pairs or alone, was to prove that winter skating as an amusemet has lost none of its fascination and charm to our younger people. It would be invidious to mention one here or there, when all were so successfully costumed, and Thursday night's gathering should prove equally attractive and interesting.
