OTOROHANGA v. TANEHOPUWAI The above match was played on the Te Kuiti ground on Saturday iaat. Tanehopuwbai won the toss and Holden kicked off for Otorohanga. The Otorohanga forwards carried play into the Tanehopuwai 25 and by kicking too hard lost a chance of scoring. Otorohanga continued to press their opponents. Anderson marked and relieved. Holden and Symes broke away with ball at toe and Symes scored. B. Clarke failed with his kick. Patton made a good attempt to drop a goal. Otorohanga kept the Tanehopuwai men on the defensive. Griffiths was conspicuous for good tackling. A good run by Rawhiri took play to mid-field. Otorohanga were soon attacking again. Hiri cleared his line well. A free kick awarded to Tanehopuwai relieved them. Griffiths was again noticeable for sound tackling and following up, and many times helped his side to get out of a tight corner. A large number of free kicks were awarded to either side for offside play. Play was carried for the first time into the Otorohanga 25, and the position seemed dangerous, but the line was not crossed. The Otorohanga forwards dribbled the ball back into the Tanehopuwai 25, where they were awarded a free kick. B. Clarke placed a goal. From the kick off play was taken into the Otorhanga 25, where it remained for some time, the Tanehopuwai forwards triyng hard to cross the line, but seemed unable or unwilling to give their backs a chance. Symes getting possession raced up the field, passed to Ellis, and the latter scored. B. Clarke failed with his kick. Half time was called with the score Otorohanga 9—Tanehopuwai nil. Shortly after the kick off Otorohanga began to press their opponents. Edwards marked and B. Clark made a good though unsuccessful attempt at goal. From a forward scramble Patton picked up and scored. B. Clarke again failed. Otorohanga continued to press. Hira relieved with a good line kick. The Otorohanga backs started a good passing run; the ball travelled from Edwards to Harris, to coll, the latter scoring. Another good attempt at goal was made by B. Clarke, the ball just going outside the post. The Otorohanga forwards kept banging away at the Tanehopuwai line. Hira relieved the tension with a lengthy line kick. Edwards again started a passing rush among the Otorohanga backs which ended in Tal Clarke scoring, again the kick failed. After some scrambling play among the forwards the Otorohanga backs again got going, and Harris scored. The game thus ended with the score Otorohanga 21 points—Tanehopuwai nil
Mr N. B. Lusk as referee gave every satisfaction. NOTES. Considering the fact that the Taneopuvvai men were a beaten team from the start, it must be admitted that they made a good fight. They still lack knowledge of the finer points of the game, but they possess a wonderful amount of determination. For the losing team, Griffiths played a splendid game, his attacking and defensive work being good to see and his side saved again and again by hia plucky defence. Hira also did some good work, his line kicking proving very useful, For the winners Symes, Holden and Patton played well among the forwards. Symes showed a strong inclination to play off side, and had to be pulled up by the referee several times. Among the backs the Clarke Bros., Elils and McColl showed to advantage. Edwards also played well, but was inclined to hang on to the ball too long. Ellis is a dashing young player, and given another season or two of play should prove to be a dangerous man. B. Clarke's kicking was of a high order. All his attempts at goal were good, and only failed to add the major points by a very small margin. TE KUITI v. OI'ARURE. This match was started on the Oparure ground, but was not finished. On account of the behaviour of the spectators the referee wisely decided to stop the game. The actual facts are not yet to hand, but no doubt mtye will be heard of the matter, and it is hoped this most regrettable incident will be thoroughly sifted out and dealt with by the Union.
