AMUSEMENTS

EMPIRE PICTURES. The Empire Picture Company gave their first Thursday evening entertainment this week, when an excellent programme was exhibited to an enthusiastic audience. All the dramatic items were well received. The acenics proved some of the finest yet screened, while the comedy subjects, which never fail to bring forth applause, were heartily enjoyed by all present. On Monday evening next, we are promised a special star programme, in that splendid dramatic picture " The Colour - sergeant's Horse," described by-the press to be one of the finest dramatic subjects ever screened. Other dramas will include "Unselfish Love," The Child's Strategem," etc. Beautiful scenics will include "Sights Along the Nile," "Bastia to Corte," "Winter at St. Moritz.' "The American Count" is declared to be the funniest comedy ever produced, and the side-splitting comedies "Tontolini —Auto Driver," "The Sergeant," and "Cousin Tontolini, have been specially selected. The prices will be as usual. AT THE RJ.JNK.

Cold winter evenings, such a3 are now the rule, are ideal for rinking, and in every town throughout the Dominion, people who like to keep the red corpuscle dominant, flock their rink, and "roll" dull care off the track for the nonce. This town now has its rink, and the numerous patrons confront themselves with the query : "What should we do but for this?" Someone handy is certain to involuntarily shiver—and that is the answer. Messrs Coles and Grinter have without doubt conferred a boon on this township, and are sparing no effort to popularise the pastime. They realise tlvit the enjoyment of any amusement depends upon the appertainances, and so they are particularly careful to have skates and floor in the primest condition. Beginning the season with very few competent skaters, the rink has not been able to provide a great variety cf novelties, but this feature is gradually becoming more possible, and should soon be predominant. On Thursday evening the usual hockey was again a feature. A potato race was also held and proved interesting, despite that several novitiate performers deliberately "sat upon" "Mr Murphy" at his introduction. We take liberty to suggest to the proprietors the introduction of more figure skating for couples and mixed sexes, especially in view of the approaching carnival on July stli.
