NATIVE LANDS.
At the conference of A. and P. delegates in Auckland on Thursday, Mr W. C-adsby, President of the King Country Central A. and P. Association, moved that the time has arrived when the settlement of Native lands should be made a national question. The motion was seconded by Mr R. M. Somerville. Mr Gadsby thought that this burning question should be settled, and that it was the duty of farmers to see that all the lands in the country were settled.
Mr R. M. Somerville, in seconding the motion, said the idea waa to make the question of Native lands a better known one. People from outside were not aware of the true position. Tt was only those immediately affected that felt the aceuteness of the sitution. Outsiders, that was to say, people from the South were unaware of the unsatisfactory state of matters in that direction. for instance, there were land 3 to the extent of 480,000 acres locked up in the King Country. In the WaikatoManiapoto Land Board 300,000 acres were vested, of which only something between 30,000 and 40,000 acres had been settled. The balance had recently been tied up by special orders-in-council. The position, therefore, was that men who were taking up land alongside these unoccupied Native lands were enhancing the value, of which the Natives were fully aware. Several other speakers dealt with the matter, and the question was well debated, with tha result that a committee was set up to go into the matter, Mr R. M. Somerville being elected as the King Country representative.
The Committee met yesterday morning, in the office of the A. and P. Association, when a considerable amount of work was done. It was decided to collect all the possible data, and have maps made for circulation, showing all the unoccupied Native lands in New Zealand. The Chairman of the Waitomo County Council, Mr A. Scholes, Cr Hoffman, and Mr P. Mora (County Clerk) are at present ir, Auckland dealing with the question of rating Native lands.
