Otorohanga
The return match betwejn the Kio Kio Ride. Ciub and the W.M.R. No 2, Otorohanga Troop, eventuated on Empire day on the Kio Kio range.. The. bay was an idea! one for the contest, with the exception of a slight; mirage and a bright dazzling light at the 200 yards range. The conditions were seven shots and an optional sighter at 200 and 500 yards respectively, and it is pleasing to note the decided improvement that is shown in the form of the much so that it will not be very long before they make the ciub take second place to them, unless the clubmen show better form. The match was very exciting at the finish, and when the last shot was fired, and the value signalled at the butts, it was found the result was a tie. Each of the competitors at the firing point—soo yard then fired one shot, and the. Kio Kio Club, leading by 8 point on the grand total, were declared winners. Following are the scores: —

The claim for specific performance of contract, Ward "(Mr J. P.. Reed) v. Bersker (Dr Bamford), was set down for Wednesday 24th inst, at Otorohanga. The case, however,- was settled out oil court by the defendant forfeiting half his deposit, each party paying their own costs. The section about which the claim was made has been sold to another settler at an advanced price. Honikiwi. Matters in this district have been very quiet during the iast week or two. Crops are looking well, and the prospect of winter feed is very much brighter than it was a month or so ago. Surface sowings in most parts have taken well, and what only a few weeks ago was a black and desolate mass is now a green and pleasant sits. The road from Otorohanga is badly in need of the long-expected metal. During the last rains it became so bad that it was almost impossible to get in, and as the winter stoves have now to be brought in, matters are net very pleasant. Settlers all along the road are complaining. With the metal en the road the journey from Otorohang3, which now takes five hours to accomplish, could be done in two and a half.
The district has proved to be a good sporting ground this season, especially as regards pigeon-shooting. Several good bags have been reported. Last week Messrs Carter and Potter secured in three hours a fine bag of twenty pigeons. The Maoris have been making sad havoc among the "white-breasts," however, as large parties are coming in from all points of the compass to shoot. The school is in a very prosperous condition at present. There are 17 pupils on the roll, and the average attendance is about 15. A new school will soon be needed, if the district grows at the present rate.
