SLAUGHTER-HOUSE PROSECUTIONS.

To The Editor. | Sir,—l have just read your report j of the Police Court proceedings on Thursday last, when I was charged with failing to wash down my slaughterhouse after the slaughtering for the day was finished, and I would ask room in your paper to correct i an error which appears therein. In i your report you state there was j "refuse on the floor with maggots i half an inch long " Now, Sir, this statement is entirely wrong and un- | true. Mo such evidence was given J nor was any statement to this effect | made by either the Inspector of j Stock or the Veterinary Surgeon, the i only witness called for the prosecu- | tion Such a mistake though it was j undoubtedly published in error by yourself innocently enough, tends to cause me grave injury, and I feel that it is due not only to myself but to my customers that I should correct the statement. The only occasion upon which the word "maggots" was used was when the Inspector mentioned that they v.-ere in a drain which is outside my slaughterhouse altogether. With regard to the actual offence with which I was charged, I need only say that the smallness of the fine, £o, is sufficient proof that the charge upon which a conviction was entered was not a serious one, more especially as the penalty allowed by the Act is £SO. I trust in justice to myself you will publish thi3 explanation, and I can in conclusion only say that it has at ail times been my honest endeavour to keep my slaughterhouse as plear and sweet a3 possible and I invite you or any member of the public to go up to the building at any time and inspect it and its surroundings thoroughly. As to the decision which anyone so inspecting would give I have riot the slightest doubt. They could do no leas than say that everything is clean and in order. —I am, etc., j N. VV. ALBRECHTSEN.
