Kaeaea.
A public meeting convened for the ■ purpose of furthering matters in re-; gard to the proposed hall at Kaeaea was held in the school-room on Thursday evening. Settlers attended from a wide range of localities. The project was discussed, with the enthusiasm characteristic of Kaeaea rssi- , dents. The Chairman, Mr Sydney , Williamson, laid the report of the j previous work of the committee before the meeting, and ail expressed | themselves satisfied with the position j of affairs. A site of one acre of free- j hold land has been procured. The j material for the floor and iron for i walls and roof was ordered and mostly ; carted, and a contract let to Messrs , Bisman and Kraiger for the sawing of j the balance of the timber. It was ; decided to ask Mr F. El wood and Mr j Reid to quote a price for the erection j of the building. The meeting resolved to register under the Ircor- | porated Societies Act at an early j date. The youth and beauty of Kaeaea are looking forward in eager anticipation to the aances to be held this winter, and it is rumoured ! that a local pugilist is giving free i lessons in the noble art of self-defence j as soon as floor space is available. In j view of the breaking up of the road, | rendering carting difficult and expensive, several settlers have undertaken j the responsibility, and the committee have therefore been able to order all i material for the hall. But for those j worthy settlers undertaking this re- j sponsibiilty, the building operations i would have been shelved for another j season. The energetic manner in ; which the hall proposal _ has been j carried forward redounds in no small • manner to the credit 01 the busy com- I mittee. j News which has reached the your correspondent, suggests the iciea ■ that to insure the safety of the com- i munity the energy of residents might , well be directed towards the establish- i ment of a local gaol and police station ! somewhere in this locality prefer- : ably on the Faro road for convenience. ! A fine bridge has been erected over ■ the Mangawhero stream on the Ohura road. This will be weclomed by ■ settlers along that road, as the old! structure was in very truth a trap. In view of the many other bridges re- j quired, settlers are disappointed to | learn that a quantity of the plant has j been removed right out of the district. , Matters in connection with the cooperative dairy factory at Aria are now on a sound footing, and the directors are to consider applications for the position of manager at their , next meeting. It is to be regretted that Mr Jas. Collins, who has until now worthily filled the office of Secretary to the company, has, owing to accumulation of other duties, been obliged to resign. Mr Ward was appointed to the office at the last meeting of directors.
