AWAKINO COUNTY.

j WHAT IS ITS DESTINY? | The question of whether Awakino County should become operative cr not was discussed at Monday night's meeting of the Waitomo County Council. A letter was received from the Hon. Secretary of trie County Committee (Mr C. Leach), asking for information to en-able them to lay before a public meeting, as to whether it would be better to merge into Waitomo County or form an independent county, and other information of a useful nature. —The Clerk had replied that as far as he understood from the Chairman, it would be necessary to make the.County operative first, and afterwards those portions of the County leading in this direction might join Waitomo County, and other portions Kawhia and other Counties. He was of opinion it would not pay to form a County of their own, the district being so divided. Cr. O'Dwyer said that all on this side of the Managotaki watershed should come into the County. They were using the County roads. He approved of the Chairman' letter.

Cr Were stated there was a diversity of opinion in Awakino County. Mangaotiki wanted to come in, Pomerangi wanted their own council or to come in, and on the Marokopa river they would join Kaw'nia. He thought they should make their County operative, and then either cut uu the County or keep it as a whole. Anything to cut oft' and go into Kawhia he would fight it tooth and nail. Mr Jennings said the northern end should join Waitomo County. He practically agreed with what the Chairman had written. _
