AUSTRALIAN BUTTER-GRADING

The announcement that the Federal Government will set going on July Ist the system of compulsory grading of butter has been well received here; the trade papers have given prominence to the news, writes the London crorespondent of the "S.M. Herald." The collateral stamping on the box of the grade is an all-round boon to grocers, and all parties who desire to see Australian butter sold here in an honest fashion. But some surprise is expressed that the stamping of the grade on the case is not confined to the superfine and first grades. Though one does not understand the reasons why this limitation was imposed, yet it is obvious that it will work for good. For it will place a heavy premium on the first grades, and thus encourage the manufacture of superior butter in Australia. It is plain that all c.i.f butter will have to come in the two grades named.
