WHAT MR. CARROLL SAID

A VERY DIFFERENT STORY. [by tklkubaph.—press association-.] Whangarei, This Day. Mr J. K. Kirk, of Gisborne, has been interviewed respecting the published report of a speech attributed (o Mr Carroll when unveiling the Heke monument. Mr Carroll was reported to have advised the Natives not to sell land to the Pakehas, as the Natives would then become the Pakeha's slaves, but to keep their lands and make the Pakehas slaves of the Natives. This is contradicted by Mr Kirk. Mr Carroll advised the Natives to work their lands, and by diligent industry make them profitable. "If you are wise you will commence to work the land, if not it may soon happen that all idle lands will be made available for the Pakeha for that purpose" said Mr Carroll.
