MAPARA.
(Own Correspondent.) j The usual monthly meeting of sett- | lers of the above district was held j last week, at Mr Koerisk's residence. | The urgent need for telephone com- ! munication was discussed at some length, ami it was decided to write ; the Postal and Telegraph Department j on the subject. j Much sympathy was expressed for Mr Dempsey, who recently had the misfortune to break one ol his legs. I From the sentiments expressed it is likely settlers hereabouts do not intend to let Mr Dempsey's work go behind while he is laid up. lhis shows the true spirit of co-operatiori, and is what one might, expect from a euininunity oi hustlers such as the Alnpara settlers are proving themselves to be. fully ninety per cent.of the settlers here intend to mill: for the Pio l'io dairy factory this coming season, and have made all the necessary business arrangements towards that purpose. This means that within two years of the allotment of this block the dairy- • 'mg industry has become an accomplished fact, and creates, I think, a ; record for the Dominion. ' The Taranaki Land Hoard are to be ! congratulated on their judgment, in selecting such an industrious, go-ahead crowd, they being with, a few exeep- ; tions all old back-bloekers. Considering the strides the settlement has made in such a short period, and the •energy and perseverance displayed by each and every one, they naturally don't feel llattered at coming under the beading of the "spoon-fed" fraternity, and express themselves more forcibly than politely on the subject. They console themselves with the fact that the "big Rangitira" is away in London, and the smaller fry avail themselves of the chance to bite in his absence. ! Tbt' contractor for the Mokau-Uau-I wera road bridge has been to look at j the .site, and reckons on having the | work completed within Lwo months, i This will be a boon to settlers at that end, as they have had an up-hill battle so far, in the want of a bridge. Mr Kerrisk has started to build what promises to be quite an up-to-date homestead, and we are looking forward with pleasant anticipation of a "house-warming."
