BOWLS AND GARDEN FETES.

SETTLERS' COMPLAINT. AN APOLOGY. At the meeting of the Auckland Crown Lands Board this morning, Mr Chiles, a settler, of Pwangitito No. 2, appeared before the Board to support a letter which had been written by him to the Commissioner, complaining about Mr A. B. Jordan, Crown Lanes Ranger playing bowls and attending garden fetes in Te Kuiti five days a week", instead of looking atfer settlers in the block in which he "lived. The Commissioner asked Mr C-nilss to support his complaint. Mr Chiles: I read in the King Country Chronicle" that such had been the case, but I find out that I was misled. I have since ascertained that it was another Mr Jordan. However. settlers complained that the ranger did not visit them often enough. Mr Trounsoi;: The usual state of affairs with Crown settlers is that the ranger visits them too often. The exception, therefore, seems to be with Improved Farm settlers. Mr A. B. Jordan, in justice to himself, was asked to make a statement in which he replied that owing to the very large area of country over which he had to travel that it was impossible to make the regular monthly visits. He was aware, however, that none 01 the settlers suffered any very sever e hardships. lie objected to tne statement that he played bowls instead looking after settlers' interests. He was confident that on'y one or I two of this kind ol settler wno wouid ! make such allegations against him. i He was too well known. ! Mr Chiles: I recognise that I have I been misled, and apologise. | The Commissoner: I consider you I owe the "Chi on:c;e'' an apc.ogy 1 too. I -\fter a short discussion on the suhi iect of agitators. Mr Chiles left the | room.
