A MAD COW'S FREAK.
ATTACKS ALL COMERS. A strange talc of a mad cow's doing 3 reached Te Kuiti to-day, and the occurrence happpening, as it did, about five miles out oil the Te KuitiAwakino main road, recalled in some slight measure, the antics of the mad : motorist reported the other day. It appears that on Sunday week the manager of a local butter factory was j riding homewards on his horse, when ; he observed a wild-looking cow occupying the roadway, and apparenly | intent on mischief. The animal ! charged the horseman and the horse ' turning round, the cow got its horn lin the stirrup leather and jambed ihorse and rider against the fence, ! over which the rider jumped and | escaped. Shortly afterwards, Sir i Anderson, a half-caste, also riding in ! the same direction, was savagely atj tacked by the cow, which dug-its horns ' into the horse's rear, and made the ! rider beat a quick retreat —over the ! fence too! Then came along two i Maori boys, riding bicycles. They ! looked at the beast, and thought it ■ was only a quiet old cow. Their imi pressions were rudely dispelled when | the animal charged one of the bicycles, ! litfing it high in the air and throwing the rider to the ground. Then the cow : attacked the lad and was about to gore him when it was seized by the other boy, who aggravated it so much that it turned, and becoming_ entangledin the wrecked bicycle, itself came to the ground. Both lads made off as hard as they could, one jumping over the thrice valuable fence, and the other hiding in the bush. There is a story of a mad dog told in an old ballad, wherein "The man recovered of the bite, the dog it was that died, and in this particular story every detail true as witnesses vouch —the various participators escaped without serious injury, except the cow, which was dramatically shot, and so ended its briefly vicious career.
